Ambassador I.Berziņš introduced members of the Conservative Foreign and Commonwealth Council with a short history of Latvia’s road of regaining independence. He highlighted Latvia’s successful bid to join NATO and the EU.
Describing Latvian foreign policy goals he stressed that NATO is in the cornerstone of the Latvian security and defence policy and it is a main provider of the hard security guaranties. Latvia supports strong transatlantic links between Europe and the US and provides a contribution to the international operations in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Bosnia and Georgia. The Ambassador also described relations between Latvia and Russia as pragmatic.
Speaking about the EU Ambassador I.Berziņš stressed the importance of strengthened energy security and solidarity in Europe. Finally, the Ambassador was glad to answer various questions asked by the members of the Conservative Foreign and Commonwealth Council.
