Born on 28th April 1959 in Karaganda Region of Kazakhstan.
In 1981 and in 1992 he graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR respectively. In 1992-1995 - 1st Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the UN. 1995-1996 - Head of the Department of America, Ambassador-at-large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan. 1996-1997 - Assistant to the President of Kazakhstan. 1997-1999 - First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.1999-2002 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.
Between 2002 and 2007, Mr. Erlan Idrissov served as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, non-resident Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the Kingdom of Sweden, The Kingdom of Norway and the Republic of Ireland.
Since July 2007, he served as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the United States of America and non-resident Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Federal Republic of Brazil. 2012-2017 – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.
In February 2017, Mr. Erlan Idrissov was appointed the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
He is the author of numerous articles on Kazakhstan's foreign policy issues and multilateral diplomacy. He speaks English, French, Urdu and Hindi.
